When to charter in Malta
The season runs May to October. July and August are the warmest, the busiest and the most expensive, and they are not obviously the best.
Malta has a long season by Mediterranean standards. The water is swimmable from late May and stays that way into October, which is longer than most of the northern Med manages.
| Month | Sea | Crowd | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| May | Fresh, around 19 to 21 °C | Light | Low |
| June | Comfortable, 22 to 24 °C | Building | Mid |
| July | Warm, 25 to 27 °C | Heavy | Peak |
| August | Warmest, 27 to 28 °C | Heaviest | Peak |
| September | Still warm, 25 to 26 °C | Falling away | Mid |
| October | Cooling, 22 to 24 °C | Light | Low |
The case for September
The sea holds its August temperature well into September because water lags air. The crowds do not. Boats that are impossible to get on a Saturday in August are available midweek in September at shoulder rates, and the Blue Lagoon is a different place entirely.
Booking lead time
In July and August the good boats go two to four weeks out for weekends. Midweek you can often book two or three days ahead. In May, June and October a day or two is usually enough. If you have a fixed date and a specific boat in mind, book it; if you have a flexible week, wait and take a midweek slot.
Weather cancellations
They are rarer than people expect. Malta loses maybe four charter days a season to sea state. When it happens you are refunded in full or moved to the next open date at the same price, never rebooked at a higher one.
